Center-right politician, National Coalition Party candidate Alexander Stubb defeated Pekka Haavisto, the electoral association candidate supported by the Greens, in the second round of elections on 11 February 2024.
The turnout in the second round was 70.7%, in the first round it was 75%.
The slogan of A. Stubb's election program sounded like this: “Unifying program - an open, safe and international Finland.” In his program, he voiced the following: “The post-Cold War era is over. It ended with Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The things that were supposed to bring us together - interdependence, trade, technology, energy, information and currency - are now tearing us apart. The instruments of co-operation have been weaponized. There is a redistribution of power going on in the Global West, East and South.
The next President of the Republic will take office in a world where international institutions and the rules-based world we are used to are becoming weaker. We live in an era of unrest and disorder. The President must work in the midst of this upheaval. It will take at least ten years to build a new world order. We will see both regionalisation of power and unholy alliances. Countries and regions will both compete, deal with their conflicts, and co-operate.
The President must work to ensure that we remain competitive, avoid conflicts, and invest in co-operation. In this new situation, the President of the Republic will need experience, expertise and networks."
It is clear from his election program that Finland will focus on strengthening its position in NATO, cooperation with all countries representing, in his opinion, the global west, the global east and the global south within the framework of a united Finland, where an open society, liberal democracy, the rule of law, equality and the market economy are the cornerstones of a functioning welfare society.
Alexander Stubb will officially take office on March 1, 2024. After winning the election, Stubb said becoming president was "the greatest honor of his life." He noted that he never thought he would be president 6-7 years ago when he retired from everyday politics in Finland.
I wonder how the relationship between the new President Kai-Göran Alexander Stubb and the current Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who won the election as leader of the Coalition Party in 2016, will develop? A. Stubb left the government and moved to the European Investment Bank, and then headed the European University Institute in Florence.
