Resignation of Kazakh Government in February 05, 2024

Public attention was directed to the upcoming extended meeting of the Government announced at the beginning of 2024 by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Tokayev, scheduled for February 7, 2024. Our sources informed us about the possible resignation of the Government during the meeting.

So the sudden resignation of the Kazakh government on February 5, two days before the extended meeting, caused a stir in society and significant media attention. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the cabinet of ministers headed by Alikhan Smailov and temporarily appointed Roman Sklyar, who previously was first deputy prime minister, to serve as prime minister.

At the moment, the specific reasons for the resignation of the government and official statements about the appointment of a new prime minister have not been disclosed. However, it is already known that members of the retired government will continue to perform their duties until the new composition is approved. It is expected that at the upcoming extended government meeting under the leadership of Tokayev on February 7, 2024, the results of the country’s socio-economic development will be summed up and further tasks will be outlined.

So far, experts and the media have not proposed specific names for the post of the next permanent Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. Although among the contenders for the post of Prime Minister are Murat Nurtleu, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former ambassador to Finland, and the acting first deputy PM Roman Sklyar, Serik Zhumangarin, the deputy PM, as well as the speaker of the Mazhilis Erlan Koshanov and even akims Erbolat Dosayev (Almaty), Zhenis Kasymbek (Astana) and Nurlan Nogaev (Mangystau region).
